Sharing of mine. (UPSI'S Music Students)

I am Vivi Octovia, i am the Music student in UPSI. I’m in the batch of 2014 for degree. Still in Semester 1, and still new in this course. Firstly, why do i want to take this course? Of course im interested in Music, and i love it so much. I put this as my first choice and before put this as first choice, i have thinking too much since i was 15 and i am confident about this. So right after i finished my study in Labuan Matriculation College (Foundation in Science) i further my studies here (UPSI).

I came here by zero knowledge about music, i didn’t have study Music Theory before this and i only know how to play the guitar. So for the interview i brought my guitar. Thanks God, I passed the interview and the Music Test. My expectation before this was totally different. Before this i expected that i’ll enjoy to study music, but when i started my study here, music student be like “24/7 at faculty” if you know what i mean. Meaning that, you’ll become the busiest ever person because you are not practising one instrument but there are so many instrument to learn. You need to spend your time wisely, and divide time wisely to practising each instrument. Thats how i feel. I need to plan my daily activities to make sure all things were settle perfectly even not so perfect. In other words, you need to hard work on each subject and make sure that you score for higher pointer. And now i am working on it. Even it was very hard for me but “keep calm and relax” because God will always by our side. Trust God, trust yourself, love your family and friends. Enjoy every task so that you wouldn’t feel stress about it and never do works on last minute. Last but not least, I love music very much, and i have no regret to be here(UPSI), i am working hard on it, i feel enjoy every instrument and aim for high.  If you interested in music and plan to further study about music, then you should choose Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tanjong Malim, Perak because it is the best Music faculty compared to other university.
  1. My name is Chan Eik Lei. I'm the Music Student of UPSI right now and I'm only semester 1 this year. There's a few reason of why am i applied this course. Firstly, I love music very much and it's of my interest. I can play 4 musical instruments in total. Next, i applied this course because i thought it was it's gonna be easy for me (as I mentioned, I know how to play 4 musical instruments).

However, when entered here, I only know I was so wrong. Music students are all very busy. They're all very busy in practising. Can you imagine, a student's life of which going out from hostel on about 7.30am, came home on about 11pm? It's more than 12hours :(, and this isn't only for one day, it's continuous from days to days. So much different from my expectation before entering here. However, although It might be very tired in my physical, I feel joyful and blessed because what I'm doing right now is of my own option. I have no regrets. :)

Applied Music Instrument

What is applied music instrument?

Applied music instrument is the Major Instrument that Music Students need to take from Semester 2 until end of Semester 8.

Meaning that, you need to choose one instrument as your major instrument.

You need to think wisely in order to choose and often ask seniors and lecturer for advises.

Why do we need advises?

In order to have a wonderful future, we must take the instrument that will guarantee our future. For example, you plan to take classical guitar. Classical guitar usually played by solo. It may be can play in an ensemble but not that often. So you need to consider the chances. Classical guitar in Malaysia don't have much chances for you. Besides, there are many out there that can play guitar very well and you need to compete with them. That's why you need to think wisely. Is the instrument that you will take, will give you a future.

An advised that I heard mostly from seniors and lecturers,

  • Take blowing instruments or strings, but to be better, blowing instruments will give you higher chances to perform, because there are very least of number that can play all this type of instruments.

My advise is, do a research for each of instruments and you can go for YouTube for videos for all blowing instruments.

There are the list of instruments that student can choose:

Guitar

Keyboard

Drum

Saxophone

From the right, Violin, Viola, Cello and double bass.
Strings instruments

Brass Instruments

Traditional instrument

Woodwind instrument

Classical Piano

Why should we to take an applied music instrument?

We should to take an applied music instrument, as our major instrument to ensure that you can play well for an instrument. If you have no major instruments, along your study about music in this University is totally imperfect. In other words, Major instrument is the Major part of Music course. Even there are many instruments that are need to learn still Major instrument is the instrument that you must to be expert about. So that in future, this instrument will enable you to perform or may be you can further study about it. Besides, this applied music instruments also will be on final assessment on every semester until the end of Semester 8.

Will we buy the applied music instruments by ourselves?

The answer is Yes!
We need to buy it by ourselves unless the instrument price RM 10 000 and above. This instrument will be provided for us to borrow.
For instrument that price RM 10 000 below, before buy it, we must ask the lecturers opinion because they knew what the best brand and cheaper price.
